I solved the problem by going to the website of the manufacturer of my mother board, and downloading and reinstalling the drivers for the soundcard installed on the mother board. When installing Windows 7, after installation, Windows does updates and loads there generic drivers into the setup, thus getting rid of the ability to fold back sound to Audacity. I found the answer when I had the same problem.

Higher end sound cards do still offer this, but the MS sound mapper input and output are two separate things and AFAIK you can't set it so that the mapper output goes to the mapper input. A prominent example was the soundblaster cards which used to provide an input for recording called "what u hear", which was exactly what it says this is no longer available in newer cards.
